What is a dental crown?

Our natural teeth are made of a crown, the part of the tooth you can see above the gum line, and the roots that anchor the tooth in the jaw. If the crown of your tooth is cracked or broken, we shape, fit, and place an artificial dental crown that restores the function of the damaged tooth.

How long does a crown appointment take?

Getting a crown takes about as much time as getting a filling. Plan for an hour as we clean and shape your tooth and place a temporary crown. At a subsequent appointment, we replace the temporary crown with a permanent crown.

What does the procedure entail exactly?

We simply remove the decay, reduce the tooth in size to prepare for the placement of the crown, take a digital impression to create the final crown, and place a temporary crown that will protect your tooth and allow it to function at normal capacity until we place your final crown at your next appointment. Our digital scans make the experience much more comfortable for our patients, eliminating traditional goopy impressions from the process.

Using CEREC Technology for Dental Crowns

We also offer same-day crown restorations that can be done in one visit. We plan, produce, and insert an individual ceramic crown during your first (and only) appointment, using a digital scan rather than a goopy impression. During this efficient and highly reliable process, we are able to acquire a 3D image of your tooth and email it to the dental lab for the precise design of your restoration. We guarantee a comfortable fit and a natural look as we customize your treatment in just one day.

Does it hurt to get a crown?

No. Like with a filling and most dental procedures, we numb the area with local anesthesia. As the anesthesia wears off, you may feel a little discomfort but nothing that can’t be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications. If you prefer more than a little numbing, we offer a variety of sedation and anesthesia options that are available to all our patients. Your comfort is very important to us, and we will do all we can to ensure you are relaxed and at ease during your visit.

Can I eat after having a crown?

Excellent question. We recommend waiting about 30 minutes after completion of your treatment before eating or drinking and about 24 hours before eating anything hard or sticky that might pull at the crown before the cement has fully settled.
